When Should You Get Your Kid a Cell Phone?

What's the Right Age for a Cell Phone?

My daughter got her first cell phone in 7th grade (after much lobbying, whining, begging, and squabbling). Because she took public transportation home from school, my husband and I decided it was a good idea from a safety standpoint.
There were no texts, the phone couldn't take pictures, she was told how many minutes were allowed, and we did take it away from her as a punishment once (and it was very effective). Flash forward to the next child, four years her junior. He got a phone in 6th grade, mostly for the same reasons.

The Importance Of Mobile Phones In Education

Teenager Ethan Davids describes how essential his phone is to him.
EthanFrom listening to music, to taking and editing pictures of teachers, the young community have found various ways to misuse the new technology being made available to them in such small and compact mobile phones. Obviously, anything that can disrupt learning, or teaching, cannot be accepted in a classroom environment and should be dealt with accordingly. It is my opinion that as technology advances at such a blistering pace, policies such as ‘mobile phones should be switched off and in your bag’, can be modified to benefit not only students, but teachers and schools alike.

Why tablet?

You are getting ready to leave your desk, and you know you will need to stay connected and get some work done on the go. Do you take your laptop, tablet, or smartphone? A tablet is sort of like a more portable notebook built on a mobile operating system platform, and brings some unique advantages to the table.
Here are five reasons that the tablet is a better choice for mobile computing than a laptop or smartphone:

The tablet is more than a consumer toy -- it can be a very capable mobile computing device.
1. Portability
Tablets are thin and light. If you have a MacBook Air, or an ultrabook, the distinction may not seem as significant, but when it comes to most laptops, a tablet is thinner, lighter, and more portable by a long shot. When you’re carrying around a bag all day, the difference between one pound and five pounds adds up. Speaking of bags, most laptops require their own luggage to transport from Point A to Point B, but you can grab a tablet on your way out the door like you’re picking up your keys or sunglasses.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

The Good The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is extremely slim, has a gorgeous, super-high-definition display, tonnes of power, and the latest version of Android KitKat on board.
The Bad It's packed full of so much bundled software from Samsung and third parties that it will likely be confusing for first-time Android users.
The Bottom Line With its slim design, fantastic screen, and oodles of power, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is a superb smaller tablet, and a worthy competitor to the ever-popular iPad Mini.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha

Aluminum sides, chamfered edges, slim profile, solidly built back -- this is what Samsung's chosen as its brand-new design language, and it's why the Galaxy Note 4 andNote Edge (which was introduced this week) have a premium look and feel. But the new Note isn't the only device with the same type of setup: It has a smaller sibling called theGalaxy Alpha that was announced just three weeks prior. The Alpha, which should be making its way into select markets (such as the UK) this month, is a compromise for those who want a good-looking phone, but don't want one that's so large.

ASUS' MeMO Pad 7

It's IFA, so of course ASUS is going to launch a new tablet. This time it's a new MeMO Pad 7 (ME572C) that not only sports a different Intel Atom chip (the 64-bit quad-core Z3560 that clocks up to 1.83GHz), but also has a new chic look that's "inspired by clutch bags and wallets," as well as a screen upgrade to a whopping 1,920 x 1,200 resolution (323 ppi) -- a nice jump from the predecessor's 1,280 x 800 panel. The new Android 4.4 tablet is also thinner at 8.3mm and slimmer at 269 grams, thanks to its fiberglass body, duralumin frame and slim screen bezels. Other features include 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of internal storage, up to 64GB of microSD expansion, up to 16GB of free cloud storage, dual speakers and 5MP/2MP cameras.
